Julie Douglass


Julie Lynn Douglass, daughter of Gene and Linda and sister of Jill, grew up in Mtn. Grove. As a young girl, Julie was active in a variety of childhood activities such as, Girl Scouts, the Springfield School of Dance, SummerScape at Drury College, and the Mtn. Grove Swim Team. Early in her life, Julie developed a love of books. She became an avid reader and a tireless seeker of knowledge throughout her life. Julie attended Mtn. Grove High School where she held class offices and was an active member of many clubs and organizations. She graduated in 1992 in the top 10 percent of her class.

Following high school graduation, Julie attended Culver-Stockton College in Canton, MO. She was a four-year recipient of Culver-Stockton College’s highest scholarship, the Pillars of Excellence Academic Scholarship. At Culver-Stockton, she was an active member of Chi Omega Sorority and Psi Chi Psychology Club. While pursuing a psychology degree, Julie was involved with at-risk children through her internships with Chaddock, a residential school of troubled youth and the Quincy Department of Family Services. Julie graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Culver-Stockton College in May 1996, and received the Outstanding Psychology Student Award.

In the fall of 1996, she was accepted into the Masters of Art Therapy program at Emporia State University in Emporia, KS. She continued to work with children through internships at the Wellsville School District and Menninger’s in Topeka, KS. She became a member of the Art Therapy Association. Julie graduated from Emporia State University in December 1997, with a Masters Degree in Art Therapy. Julie moved to Kansas City in December, and secured her first job as an Art Therapist at College Meadows Hospital in February 1998. She was so proud that she had achieved her goal and was eager to begin helping others.

Julie is missed by many and will be remembered for her love of family, friends, reading, music, animals, nature, outdoor activities, new adventures, and her wonderful sense of humor and extraordinary intelligence.
