Megan Spence

The daughter of Larry and Linda Spence, Megan was born and raised in Willow Springs. She lived a very active 16 years. After she was diagnosed with brain cancer at age 13, she became even more active and lived with purpose beyond her years.

For over three and one-half years Megan lived a life of courage, service and leadership against extreme odds. Through her numerous surgeries, chemotherapy treatments and radiation, she served others and lived every day to the fullest. Twice Megan traveled to Mexico to repair homes for the impoverished and helped with vacation bible school for Mexican children. She volunteered in the pediatric unit at a regional hospital, was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, and active with her church youth group. Megan was also very active in school. She was on the Willow Springs Varsity Tennis Team, a member of their Marching Band, treasurer of the National Forensic League, treasurer of the Junior Class and a member of the National Honor Society.

After she was diagnosed with cancer, Megan received a stuffed bear that was comforting to her and decided she wanted to give that same comfort to others. She organized the “Blessed Bears Company” and raised hundreds of dollars and delivered many bears to sick and hurting kids. This mission lives on. Megan also helped spearhead the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Howell County and was responsible for the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the survivor’s lap. She was a very caring and special person. Megan was repeatedly asked to give a motivational talk, and she always highlighted three key points that kept her going: friends, family, and faith.
