About Back Pain
Back injury is the second leading cause of missed work behind the common cold. It is a rapidly growing epidemic. Today, between six and seven million Americans will call in sick with back pain.
Back injuries may occur suddenly, but the real problem comes on gradually. The activities of daily living slowly wear out your back, making it progressively weaker and stiffer. Then, one day, your back gives out. The pain then comes on suddenly, often with no symptoms of the underlying disease process.
Some back injuries occur from lifting too much weight or from repetitive motion. Most back problems result from practicing poor lifting techniques, stress, poor physical fitness and lack of strength.
